The Wonderful Honan Chapel
UCC, Cork
“A testament to the wealth of exception craftsmanship and conservation skills that can be found in Ireland today. The skills required to complete these works, which have been expertly co-ordinated by a conservation architect, included specialists in limestone, lead work, plastering, silver, stained glass, mosaic and joinery. In line with good conservation practice, extensive non-destructive testing was used to identify hidden details, to establish causes of decay and moisture deterioration and to evaluate the potential effectiveness of proposed interventions.“ – RIAI Jury
The Honan Chapel is modest in size and outwardly presents as a simple oratory church, however it is steeped in intricate decoration with references to the Hiberno Romanesque period combined with a contrasting mix of architectural and decorative styles which blend together to form a unique richness not seen in any chapel of the period. The conservation and repair of this chapel has protected and enriched this chapel which is unique of its time and has been scheduled in many publications including “The Honan a Golden Vision” by Virginia Teehan (2004).
