‘A Stitch in Time…

…Saves Nine’ as the saying goes. Neglect and poor maintenance of old buildings can come back to haunt as the attached photos show the consequences of both.

A slipped slate leads has allowed water to enter into a roof space as has happened here. The lime torching applied to the underside of the slates to keep them in place and resist winds and moisture has come away over time.

The almost constant ingress of water has inevitably lead to the rotting of the roof timbers, in this case a number of rafters and a section of wall plate will need to be replaced. The situation could have been avoided if the roof finish was maintained and any leaks repaired.

There is a excellent guide to maintenance of older buildings available on our website and includes a check list for you to use. https://fmp.ie/resources/
